Grenfell Goannas Report

28/04/2008 8:17:06 AM
The Goannas were unlucky in a game that they should have won.

Canowindra had one of those days when the luck was with them.

Grenfell were very determined and just kept moving forward even though things were working against them.

Canowindra were under pressure from a very committed Goannas outfit that came to play.

Grenfell had a new look side for the game with nine positional changes.

Grenfell went on the attack with strong defence that caused Canowindra to panic and this forced them to come up with plenty of errors.

The Goannas were rewarded for their effort when Kyle Hutchings playing halfback for the first time raced away to score in the corner. The conversion missed and Grenfell led 4 points to nil.

The Goannas were playing a much better brand of football than they have been over the last two weeks, and it payed dividends.

Justin Gunn ran on to a neat pass and crashed over in the corner and took the lead out to 8 nil.

Canowindra were being bustled out of the game.

Grenfell had a much smaller forward back on the field but they dominated with sheer courage and determination.

Bernie Millynn was moved to prop for the game and played the best game he has played for the Goannas and lifted the team with his efforts.

Dan Lennane and Corey Clarke also lifted.

Both boys aren’t overly big but make up for it with sheer determination.

Grenfell attacked Canowindra’s line for the next twenty minutes and should have scored two more tries but a few passes were called forward and a couple of balls didn’t find the mark.

Canowindra looked out on their feet with the Goannas dominating all the play.

With only six minutes from half time and Grenfell attacking, a ball came loose in a tackle and a Canowindra player gathered it in and raced away to score. Grenfell’s lead was cut back to 8 points to 4.

Grenfell soon went back on the attack and with the hooter about to sound James Eppelstun made a 40 metre break up field.

His brother loomed up on the inside and a try was on offer.

The Canowindra halfback was out wide having a blow, he jumped between the two Grenfell players and bingo the ball landed straight on his chest.

He raced up field and just as the Grenfell players gathered him in he passed the ball over his head and it fell into the hands of his team mate and over he went for the try.

Canowindra although not really in the game at any time led 10 points to 8 at the break.

Canowindra came out all fired up and with good play and some very lucky calls ran in two tries in five minutes and this had Grenfell on the ropes and wondering what the hell was happening.

Canowindra now led 22 points to 8.

The Goannas to their credit shrugged this off and put their heads down and worked hard to get back into the game.

Justin Gunn scored his second try when he out-smarted the cover defence and crashed over out wide.

Daniel Lennane got more involved and punished the Canowindra boys with hard-hitting defence.

Dan was next to score when he burrowed under the defenders and came away with the try.

Grenfell were right back in the game and only two points down and finishing the stronger.

Grenfell were on the attack and a try was there for the taking but a dreaded intercept put pay to that.

Grenfell couldn’t take a trick and an ounce of luck is all that was needed.

Canowindra scored a try against the run of play, the pass looked questionable but that was the luck Canowindra was having.

Canowindra 28 Grenfell 20.

Once again Grenfell dug deep and came up with a try. The kick missed and with only minutes to go the game belonged to anybody.

Ben Walker broke through the line and gave the Goannas a big chance to snatch the game.

Out of the fire he found Justin Gunn backing up.

Justin took play another ten metres ahead, he passed the ball over his back and found Luke Frost unmarked.

The whole bench went up but soon sat back down when the Ref ruled that the pass had gone forward.

Canowindra held on to win the match but all praise must go to the Goanna players.

They gave their all right to the final whistle.

The whole side can hold their heads high for the effort they put in and a win is on its way.

Players Player Bernie Millynn.
