Cowra Eagles swoop on Stingers

18/07/2008 9:45:00 AM
The Grenfell Stingers played Cowra Eagles 1 side on Sunday. With the Eagles now on top of the ladder we knew we would have to be on our game.

The game started well for Grenfell with our midfield David “lets keep the ball in the air” Knapp, Clare, Mitch Walker and the grandpa of the team Gary, were combining well.

Mitch had some good early runs which kept our star strikers Denaldo and Matthew “why am I picked on” Clarke running hard.

Cowra soon started to make some good runs too, which had our backs – Tim, Dylan, Mitch and Murray, the wiggle, on their toes.

Cowra soon scored a lucky goal when our goalkeeper Brad lost his footing.

This only made Grenfell more keen to score with Joseph, Janet “look at me” Anthony and her older and maybe wiser brother Criss coming off the bench.

We soon took back control and scored when Joseph took a wonderful corner straight past the keeper.

With just about everyone scoring in recent weeks it was only a matter of time before grandpa scored.

With great control and passing we kept their keeper busy for the rest of the half and we were unlucky not to score again.

Second half was going well until our midfield pushed up a bit to far. This gave Cowra a couple of easy counter attacks, they scored a couple of quick goals, but Brad was unlucky not to save both.

He just got a hand to both but could not keep them out.

This didn’t stop Grenfell who still pushed hard. Winning a free kick just outside the box – Mitch Walker was unlucky not to score when the keeper just got his finger tips to it.

Grenfell were playing well but could not score another goal.

Final score was Cowra three defeated Grenfell one.

Man of the match went to Tim who had a great game.

Next week we travel to Cowra to take on Eagles 2. We will meet Dylan at our great sponsors – the Grenfell Bowling Club at 10.00am sharp.
