Last week the Show No Mercy dart team of Sylvia Butcher, Sharyn Bradtke, Pam Hutson, Mary Fanning, Laurel Schiemer, Sharon Saye, Lain Thiel and Deidre Carroll with a game start challenged the Railway Hotel in the town dart competition.
In what was one of the closest games for a long time, the Railway Hotel team of Allan ‘out of retirement Loges’ Logan, Tony ‘Minichello’ Fenech, Steve ‘the tall one’ O’Byrne, Dave ‘Killer’ Thiel, Murray ‘Cod’ Logan, Ian ‘Inky’ Armstrong, Daniel ‘Fann’ Fanning and Barry ‘McKenzie’ Bradtke got away to a flying start in 301, winning the first three games.
‘Loges’ (double 2) and without his shoes and ‘Minichello’ defeated Sylvia and Sharon B, ‘The tall one’ (double 1) and ‘Killer’ had a win over Pam and the great South Sydney supporter Mary and the ‘Cod’ and ‘Inky’ (double 6) defeated Laurel and Sharon S.
Although the Railway won these three games, most times both teams were vying for a double.
In the last and very exciting game of 301, Lain (double 1) and Deidre defeated ‘Fann’ and ‘McKenzie’ who had to be called to the board from his cut-out party.
In the first game of 501 Sharyn B and Sylvia (double 9) reversed their first round loss and defeated ‘Minichello’ and ‘Loges’ to make the score Railway 3 - Show No Mercy 3.
The ‘tall one’ pinned his second double 1 for the night and with ‘Killer’ defeated Mary and Pam. ‘Inky’ (double 7) and the ‘Cod’ followed suit and won their second game over Sharon S and Laurel.
In another very close encounter Deidre with some coaching from the side “get a ten or 6 to leave you on a double” to squeals of delight jagged double 17 and with partner Lain had their second win for the night over the two top guns ‘McKenzie’ and ‘Fann.
After 501 the Score was Railway 5 - Show No Mercy 4.
The Show No Mercy Team was on a roll and in the first game of 701 Sylvia, Sharyn B, Pam and Mary were up against ‘Loges’, ‘Minichello’, ‘the tall one’ and ‘Killer’ and in a very high scoring game and both down to a double, Pam was able to jag her favourite double 13 to win the game and make the score 5 all.
‘Loges’ at this stage declared he had an equipment problem - not sure whether it was with him or his darts.
In the final and very close game for the night Laurel, Sharon S, Lain and Deidre were up against ‘the cod’, ‘Inky’ ‘Fann’ and ‘McKenzie.’
By this stage the Railway team was starting to show signs of nerves and you could have heard a pin drop. After some very high scores again both teams after a double - The Railway double 5 and Show No Mercy double 1, ‘the Cod’ finally pulled himself together and pinned the double 5 for the Railway to retain the cup 6 games to 5.
Highest scorers for the Railway were Steve ‘The tall one’ with a tonne twice and two double 1’s, ‘Loges’ with his equipment problem also managed a tonne and one double, ‘Minichello’ had a top of 95 and ‘Inky’ had a top of 93 and pinned two doubles.
Although ‘the Cod’ did not have a high scoring night he pinned the most important double of the evening double 5 to win the match.
‘Killer’ Dave was not sure who to barrack for as he required a lift home with Lain and ‘McKenzie’ after the cut-out certainly required a lift home with his wife Sharyn.
All the girls played well for Show No Mercy with Pam topping the score for the night on 123 and pinning the double 13 to take the game into a thriller.
Lain pinned a tonne and a double, Laurel also pinned a tonne, Deidre 90 and she and Sylvia both jagged a double and Sharyn B had a top of 86. Mary and Sharon S kept the Railway on their toes all night.
Following the game, Deidre was presented with an early birthday cake (for August 1).
Thank goodness Laurel did not put all the candles on the cake.
Sincere sympathy is extended to Colleen Handcock and her family from all darters on the passing of her mother this week. Our thoughts are with you all.
The Exchange Hotel with a game start will challenge tonight August 6, followed by the Royal August 13, The Criterion August 20 and the Grenfell Bowling Club August 27.
