Two gentlemen from the towns of Lakefield and Reaboro in the Diocese of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada stopped over in Grenfell on Thursday night July 3 en route to World Youth Day and celebrations in Sydney.
The pair, Brendan Quigley and Frank Callaghan had set themselves an ambitious goal of biking across our great continent of Australia in preparation for World Youth Day 2008.
Brendan and Frank flew into Sydney from Canada on May 14 having brought their bikes with them. They then flew onto Perth for a few days before setting out on their epic journey from the West Coast and headed back toward Sydney on their pushbikes.
On arrival in Grenfell last week they had been on the road for 46 days and were expected to arrive in Sydney on July 7, where they have joined a group of 110 other Canadian pilgrims from their home diocese of Peterborough. They will spend this week in the Maitland Diocese before celebrations in Sydney next week.
Brendan and Frank had enjoyed the hospitality of Fr Tony Bobbin in West Wyalong the evening before their arrival here in Grenfell for an overnight stay.
Fr Allen Crowe Parish Priest of St Joseph’s said that the enthusiasm and passion of the two young men inspired him as they cycled off to Sydney for World Youth Day celebrations.
