Log on for Jesus? You ain't fooling me

IT'S OFFICIAL. The Catholic Church is fully sick. And so is George Pell. And I'm not talking about his health. The man is like massively random in a totally wicked way. Respect!

The Pellmeister has just launched a Catholic social networking site. On the electric computer. I know, futuristic! You heard that right brothers and sisters, the Micks now have their own Facebook. It's called Xt3, which stands for Christ in the third millennium.

It's way cool, all the other religions are like totally raging that their church isn't as hip. Check it out! Who are the chosen people now? Bite me. Xt3 is a social networking site for Catholic yoof. There will be no poking before marriage. Gay? Don't ask, don't tell. Back in the '70s rock masses, liturgical dancing and hippies playing guitars got young bums on pews. But that was 30 years ago! It's time to get with it! Log on, hook up and interact for Jesus!

That Catholic Church is so modern. Yes, the same church that treats gay people and women as second-class citizens, requires their priests to take a vow of celibacy and considers it a sin for a 13-year-old rape victim to have an abortion. The same church that rejects the use of condoms to fight the AIDS pandemic in Africa. That same church is so progressive and in touch with the third millennium they have a social networking site.

Xt3 has been launched to help young Catholics link up for World Youth Day and keep in contact with the yoof after the excitement of a week of prayer, trust exercises and rosary bead trading is over. World Youth Day will be held in Sydney from July 15 to July 20 and culminates in a Mass celebrated by the Pope. Yo! Big Ben is in the house. All the Bernadettes and Gerards will be able to chill out with The Main Dude. Check out the World Youth Day pilgrim apparel. Not only can you buy hoodies and baseball caps but rock on down to the online store and buy a Funky Cross Belt Buckle for $19.95 (inc GST). World Youth Day. The Time Of Your Eternal Life.

I had a cruise around the website and thought that being an atheist youth must really suck sometimes. Someone needs to organise them a jamboree. As far as weddings and funerals are concerned churches are still doing a pretty good trade. And there are grassroots Christian groups that are doing phenomenal work with the poor, the broken, the sick and the lost. Not in a "you read the Bible and we'll give you something to eat" way, but in a non-judgemental compassionate way. With open arms, closed eyes and a no-questions-asked spirit. There's plenty of work being done in the community that turns a blind eye to official church bureaucracy. Mavericks who are thinking "what would Jesus do?" and doing it.

On a weekly basis traditional church attendances are dwindling rapidly. Mega churches such as Hillsong, on the other hand, are going off like a frog in a sock. Prosperity teachings, rock and roll and use of the word "awesome" certainly have people taking Christ as their personal saviour and buying a DVD and a caramel mochaccino on the way out. Have you heard about Pillsong? Apparently ravers drop a couple of ecstasy pills and head down to Hillsong for some hugging, loving and rapture. How could you ever come down from that?

Once upon a time the word of the Lord and the fear of eternal damnation was enough to fill the pews. It's 2008 and time for churches to rethink their approach. A church round the corner has installed a colourful playground to get the young families in. What are the traditional churches going to do to stay alive? Most churches are medieval, cold and uncomfortable. Wooden pews, organ grinders and, if there is carpet, it reeks of suffering. Will churches soon start installing gold-class seating, free wireless hot spots, PlayStations for the kiddies and a Gloria Jean's coffee shop to save souls?

You've got to admire the Catholic Church's attitude. They stick to their guns. There will be no backdown on our anachronistic dogma that is at our core, but we will give you an illusion of progress. Back in April the Vatican abolished limbo, which means (apparently) unbaptised babies now have a place in heaven. I don't know whether that includes Muslim babies, Hindu babies and aborted babies. And they've updated their mortal sins to include drug dealing, environmental vandalism and "manipulative" genetic science.

If traditional churches want to stay relevant it's time for them to stop selling the sizzle and start selling steak. Which may be hard for some to swallow.

Every countries constitution should have a "freedom FROM religion" clause.

Wow... what a pathetic piece of journalism. Talk about hate mail. I'm not catholic and I don't support the catholic church, but really. This just sounds like a biter tirade to me. Think about it for a second - the catholic church is meant to be a christian church so doesn't that mean they should follow the teachings of Christ?? Did you know that Christian means 'Follower of Christ'. So wouldn't it be logical that they would stand up for what Christ did and stand against what Christ did? Read your Bible please. Your idea of 'steak' is the latest offerings spewed out from general society that change from year to year. God said "I am the same yesterday, today and forever". If you don't like God's standards, take it up with him.

Considering you're an athiest this xt3 thing and how church's are run aren't your business. I'd suggest getting over yourself. Maybe start with crawling out of your little cave and opening your eyes. No wait! We can't expect athiests to do that!

For someone who claims to be an atheist, you have a lot to say about Christians...Perhaps you need to spend more time studying your chosen topic?! As for Limbo; the Catholic Church changed it's teaching on Limbo in the 14th century...I believe... Keep trying...

Micks? When did this kind of language become appropriate? Writing flimsy, unsubstantiated garbage on a weekly basis doesn't really hurt anyone, but deeply offensive, violent, sectarian language is not something I had expected to encounter in Fairfax, even from Catherine Deveny.

Catherine, I would agree that the fickle nature of the Catholic Church is perplexing, given that the Bible is fixed and clear in its instruction, and yet, as if by some divine revelation, the Pope reckons he can just change things to suit. Interestingly you weave Hillsong into the mix, yet this is an inter-denominational protestant church which, like myself, does not have the Pope speak for it? (No, I don't agree with Hillsong's flimsy message of salvation either, for they excell at producing false converts). You also refer to a 'spirit', yet profess to be an atheist,...hmmmm, I am not entirely sure you are the master of your subject. Finally, (and I must be brief because your article is very (hot) long-winded) you slate the church for its stand against abortion, while seemingly speaking in the interests of the people at large. With this in mind, I was just wondering if it is really OK to murder a child just because it has not yet passed through the birth canal? What is the difference between two minutes unborn and two minutes born? Is it any less of a child just because you can't see it? If the pregnant girl is the unfortunate victim of rape, is it OK to encourage her to kill the life of a child, and give her another moral issue that she will carry with her for the rest of her life? Do you really think then that two wrongs make a right? Has it ever crossed your mind that she just might find some healing in raising an innocent child, fully dependent on its mother for love and guidance, in the hope she might just one day marry, settle down and have more children of her own, over the trauma of her childhood experience and able to do so because her womb has not been scraped and potentially destroyed by an abortionist / murderer? Catherine, your reasoning has been exposed. It is without foundation and I wonder how on earth you landed a job writing for The Age. Condemning the message of eternal life in one hand, and supporting murder in the other...you and your views are quite evil and I suggest you consider reading that Holy Bible that you hold so close to your mocking wit. It will indeed save your life.

Why should the Catholic church have to pander to those who find it too hard to live a good, Catholic life? If you don't want to follow the teaching of the Church, then don't. There are plenty of other belief systems that you can join. If you want a divorce join the Church of England, if you want several wives join the Mormons, if you want to smoke pot join the Rastafari Movement. While i agree that people and society have changed, i don't believe it is for the better. Toddlers on ritalin, teenage sex then abortion, parental consent of drinking & drug use, tweenies wanting plastic surgery. At least the Catholic church is trying to maintain the mission it began 2,000 yrs ago! If you feel that it is clashing with society, perhaps you should look at society!

Catherine, you've missed the whole point - church, and the worship of God, is not all about you, and what you might happen to like.

Dear Author of this article, You have not really researched very well before making these short sighted comments. The Catholic Church has been helping the less fortunate for years ever since its foundation. Nuns, brother's and priests have sacrificed their lives in the service of others. Many of us Catholics have found the Church's teachings to be relevant to our lives. This is because the Church as always, preserves the teachings of Jesus Christ. Following His teachings leads to a truly free and happy life. As a result of World Yoth Day, many young people will be inspired to deepen their faith and live out their lives guided by Chris't message of compassion. Enriched by the experience they will go back to their normal lives to do good in the world. The Catholic Church, through her dogmas and doctrines, safeguards and preserves CHrist message for each new age. Please do not hassle our right as Australians to believe in something as we do not villify you for believing in nothing.

One has to wonder where "life experience" figures in the Catholic Church's thinking. Priests that NEVER marry are telling married people how to live????? During Xt1 and Xt2 the Catholic Church kept low profile regarding paedophilia in their ranks, this year they finally acknowledged (only because their hand was forced) this evil existed in some of their shepherds.
